What is infertility?

Infertility refers to the inability to conceive or the biological inability of an individual to contribute to conception or to a female who cannot carry a pregnancy to full term.

What are the causes of infertility?

Infertility may result from an issue with either you or your partner or a combination of factors that interfere with pregnancy.

Causes of infertility in women

There are many possible causes of infertility in women which are difficult to identify. However problems with ovulation are the most common cause of infertility in women. Causes of ovulation disorders include

  • Premature ovarian failure
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Poor egg quality
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Overactive / underactive thyroid gland
  • Some chronic conditions

Causes of infertility in men

Infertility in men is essentially due to poor semen quality. Causes of poor semen quality include

  • Testicular problems (infection, cancer, etc.)
  • Overheating the testicles
  • Ejaculation disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid disease

Risk factors

Risk factors known to increase the likelihood of infertility include

  • Age
  • Eating disorders
  • Obesity, overweightness
  • Exposure to some chemicals
  • Mental stress

What are the symptoms of infertility?

The main symptom of infertility in a woman is not getting pregnant. Irregular or absent menstrual periods may be another symptom for woman.

  • Hair loss
  • Weight gain

Infertility symptoms in men include

  • Changes in hair growth

  • Erections and ejaculation problems
  • Small, firm testicles
