What is PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome)?

PMS – PreMenstrual Syndrome – describes symptoms a woman may have a few days before her menstrual cycle such as tender breasts, bloating, cramps, mood swings and headaches. Most women first get PMS in their mid-20s. However it becomes more common in women in their 30s. Women in their late 30s and early 40s may have perimenopausal symptoms that are similar to PMS. After menopause women don’t have PMS. It’s estimated that 3 of every 4 menstruating women have experienced some form of PMS.

What causes PMS?

PMS is linked to normal changes in the endocrine system which is responsible for the generation hormones that control the menstrual cycle. Although it is not fully understood why normal hormone changes cause PMS in some women and not others the one direct cause that is known to affect some women is genetic. Risk factors known to increase the likelihood of PMS include

  • A family history of PMS
  • Age
  • Anxiety, depression, or other mental health problems
  • Lack of exercise
  • High stress

What are the symptoms of PMS?

PMS occur between ovulation and the start of menstrual bleeding. PMS symptoms may vary greatly from cycle to cycle and be worse during times of increased stress. Common symptoms of PMS include
