What is lymphoedema?
Lymphoedema is a condition that develops when the lymphatic system doesn’t work properly and causes swelling in the arms or legs.
What causes lymphoedema?
Lymphoedema is commonly caused by the damage or the removal of the lymph nodes as a part of cancer treatment. It is the consequence of a blockage in the lymphatic system which prevents lymph fluid from draining well. The fluid buildup leads to swelling.
What are the symptoms of lymphoedema?
Lymphoedema signs and symptoms which occur in the affected arm or leg include
- Swelling in all or part of the arm or leg – fingers or toes included
- A feeling of heaviness or tightness of the affected arm(s) or leg(s)
- Restricted mobility of of the affected arm(s) or leg(s)
- Aching or discomfort
- Painful joints such as the elbow or knee
- Recurring infections
- Fibrosis – Hardening and thickening of the skin
